Passover Celebration

The night before the crucifixion of Jesus, our Lord and Savior shared one last meal with his disciples, commemorating the Jewish holiday of Passover. The disciples had spent their lives celebrating this annual tradition, but this Passover meal would be one they would never forget. As they reclined around the table, Jesus broke the bread and gave to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” He then took the cup and gave to them, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”

Our salvation, redemption, and justification is made possible only through the gospel — the good news that God loved us so much that he gave “his only begotten Son.” We have eternal life through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul wrote, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God” (Rom. 5:8–9).

Paul said to the church in Corinth regarding the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Cor. 11:26). As a Christ-centered, gospel-saturated church, North Cities continues this sacred tradition of Communion every year in a worship service. This is a time of self-reflection and examination, and then a time to partake of the symbolic flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
