Foundations: Cultivating a Life for Purpose
God’s Mission in the World
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told a story about foundations. He said,
“Whoever. . . hears My sayings and does them . . . is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it . . .
But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house . . . without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell” (Luke 6:47-49, NKJV).
Notice that the flood came to both houses. The man who “did nothing” lost his greatest investment, while the man who “dug deep and laid the foundation” withstood the inevitable storm. The same principle applies to our lives. The only sure foundation for a life is the principles of God’s Word.
Part of the North Cities vision is to connect people to their purpose through training. To this end, we offer a series of classes known as Foundations. The eight-week series focuses on the fundamentals of Biblical faith and the Christian life.
On Sunday, April 12th, 2015, North Cities celebrated the graduation of another group of believers from Foundations. These graduates join the nearly 400 others who have received training through Foundations since its launch in 2011. They have learned Biblical perspectives on such foundational issues as: God’s nature and redemptive purposes, our response to His work, the role of the Church, and developing an authentic Christian life.
By focusing on the foundation, these believers are cultivating a life for purpose–one that can endure life’s storms and is focused on participating meaningfully in God’s mission in the world.
